Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else by Geoff Colvin My rating: 4 of 5 stars Finished this book last week. As someone who enjoys learning about what makes humans tick, I thought this book offered a fresh perspective of what you need to be successful. Hint: It’s not inherent talent. So what does it take to be successful? It takes identifying what you like to do and then putting in deliberate practice every single day. He gives a ton of great examples of people who have demonstrated this. Geoff Colvin’s research flies straight in the face of the long argued logic that we achieve things

One Thing That You Need To Improve Execution

One Thing That You Need To Improve Execution

Achievement and execution are always a hot button issue in our society, we are always asking questions like: How do we get higher level achievers?  How do we achieve more professionally?  etc etc.   Getting better at execution means getting better at one thing and that one thing is setting goals. Part of the reason we haven’t achieved at a higher level collectively, which we are now as a society starting to look, has to do with an archaic look at achievement and where are focus should be.  The other reason has to do with the fact that it’s difficult to execute nothing.  When you don’t set goals and commit them

Why We Don’t Measure Results

Why We Don’t Measure Results

As I said yesterday, measuring results for your business is critical.  Unfortunately, we don’t always set goals and measure results for our business.  This is one of the primary reasons that businesses fail.  If it’s so important, why don’t we do it. I will just get the first reason out of the way and move on.  That reason is laziness or put another way, lack of attention toward doing it.  It’s hard work starting a business (although it’s been suggested that I am an entrepreneur because I don’t like to work, that’s funny) and there are a lot of things that we have to do that are outside our skill

Easy Accountability Starts Today

Easy Accountability Starts Today

We have goals.  We have a plan.  The trick is executing those in a manner that doesn’t take a lot of thinking so we can just go out and make things happen.  As business owners, we can make things easy on ourselves by making our action items short, sweet and manageable.  This means setting daily markers for ourselves so that we can manage our goals on a day-to-day basis. Most of us, if we have them written out, don’t manage goals and important items frequently enough.  When we finally do look at them, it’s a huge ordeal because we waited a few months and now we don’t know where to

Goals: The Ultimate Accountability Partner

Goals: The Ultimate Accountability Partner

It’s been a while since I talked about goals, here and here,  but since I have been recently talking about accountability, goals are a big part of that.  When built and used properly, goals can be a great accountability partner to help you build your business and make sure that you are on track for personal success. I am not going to go into how to set goals or why goals are important because there a ton of great resources to help you with that already.  The problem that we sometimes have is actually doing something with our goals once we have them set.  So how do we actually make

Steps to achieving your goals

Steps to achieving your goals

Some say that setting goals is the easy part.  Going out and achieving them is another story.  I would argue that both are difficult and take a game plan to make it happen.  It’s time to break goal achievement down in steps courtesy of the article: 10 Motivators for Goal Setting:  http://www.smallbusinesssuccess.biz/10_motivators.htm The first step is writing them down.  I would argue that this isn’t a step to achievement due to the fact that if you haven’t written your thoughts down, I am not sure that they are goals.  They are more like dreams.  Once they are written down it is important to break down your goals into measurable items.

A winning mindset or safe mindset

A winning mindset or safe mindset

I was asked recently how to overcome or get started on a goal setting path and have I always had an entrepreneurial mind set.  My answer to the mind set question is a resounding NO! The reason for this is many (don’t worry I will be brief).  The first thing that hindered me is that I never saw myself as an entrepreneur.  Since I saw myself only as an employee working up the ranks that is exactly what I became.  During the course of this employment journey, I wasn’t engaged in what I was doing.  The concept of security kept me at this position for almost 10 years even though
